The Early Careers Challenge 2024

We are delighted to launch this years’ Early Careers’ Charity Challenge with Cancer Research UK (CRUK). This is open to Amey employees who’re under 25 and in the Early Careers community.

This is an exciting opportunity for those in the early stages of their careers to work on their personal and professional development and enhance important skills, as well as being able to grow their profile across the business and network with key stakeholders. All whilst raising vital funds for CRUK!

What is the challenge?

All participants will be split into teams of between 5 - 7 in various regions across the UK. They’ll be asked to think of and deliver innovative ideas to raise as much money as possible for CRUK over the course of 6 working weeks, 22 July to 2 September. Each team will receive mentor support and opportunities to collaborate throughout the challenge.

The initiative launches on 26 June, 11.00 – 12.00 with the Amey CRUK Partnership team. The Early Careers team follow this up with a Key Skills workshop on 4 July, 09.30 – 12.00. It is a requirement that participants attend both sessions (virtually), with capacity to engage on the initiative.

At the end of the Challenge there will be a virtual prize-giving event, attended by all participants, mentors and senior managers. The winners of the Challenge will receive a trophy and certificate presented by CRUK acknowledging your achievement.

If you have 2 minutes to spare, to get a feel for what this entails please take a look at our Challenge video.

Who is eligible?

The challenge is open to all Graduates, Apprentices, Placement students and Amey employees 25 years and under by 1st July 2024 (subject to manager approval).

Calling all alumni! For the first time ever, we will be having an inter competition between our current Early Careers colleagues and our EC Challenge Alumni Teams!

Our employee chosen charity partnership...

Our objectives are:

  • to raise awareness of the disease – we will be sharing information, considering lifestyle choices and providing access to support if necessary
  • to fundraise – we will be having fun and getting active to fundraise for the charity, with every pound going towards beating cancer
  • to support employees volunteering – we will be providing opportunities to get out into the community and volunteer for the charity

Over the next two years, 100% of the funds you raise will go directly to vital research focused on catching cancer earlier. Spotting cancer at an early stage means that treatment is more likely to be successful.

We have a number of exciting events to get involved with over the coming months that we can’t wait to tell you about, but for now, there are some fantastic initiatives for you to get involved with:

  • Sign up to Race for Life at raceforlife.org and get 50% off the entry fee, please email Sue Racster for the discount code.
  • For a quick and easy way to give, sign up to Pennies From Heaven and donate the extra pennies from your payslip here.

Please remember to share a photo on social media and donate using our new partnership fundraising page

Pennies From Heaven

Pennies From Heaven is a way to donate the pennies from your payslip to charity every time you are paid.

How it works?

  • Each month your salary is rounded down to nearest pound and donated to Cancer Research UK. Example: if net pay was £850.34 then 34p would be donated.
  • The most you’d ever give is 99p per month – and the least is 0p per month!
  • 100% of donations will be received by CRUK and will be used help in the fight against cancer. Plus, HMRC will add 25% at no cost.
  • The average total is £6 a year – this would buy 150 test tubes to be used in cancer-fighting experiments.

Sign up to Pennies From Heaven. You'll find the link in our quick links to the right.

People managers of frontline workers can download our poster and a paper copy of the sign up form here

Payroll Giving

Payroll Giving is a simple and tax-effective way to support charity directly through your salary.

How it works:

  • Payroll Giving is also known as Give As You Earn (GAYE).
  • Your donation is deducted before tax, meaning a £10 donation will only cost you £8 if you're a standard rate taxpayer. And even less if you're a higher rate taxpayer.
  • You can choose how much money you donate monthly and can choose to donate to a number of different charities.
  • Donating just £8 a month means that over the year, CRUK can buy 500 petri dishes, to grow and study cancer cells.

How do I apply?

Click the 'Payroll Giving 'Apply Now'' button on this page (scroll back up the page and look right) and submit the form.

Once selected, the deductions will continue until you choose to cancel the benefit. You can cancel at any time by emailing peopleservices@amey.co.uk.
