Make sure you Stick to the Plan

Stick to the Plan is the third principle of Zero Code and there are three main commitments:

  • I will make sure I know and understand the plan
  • I will always check that I am following processes and safe systems of work
  • If things change I will re-assess and only start work again when it is safe to do so

Please use the Stick to the Plan materials to help you understand what this means to you and your teams (see the downloads on the right hand side). Discuss these topics in teams to help improve health, safety and wellbeing and continually improve the way we work to keep ourselves safe every day.

Returning to Work after a period of absence

For a variety of reasons, it’s understandable that some of us need to be absent from work on occasions. Returning to work in a timely and well-planned way will benefit your wellbeing and rehabilitation and could also prevent potential relapses. We’ve produced a toolkit to help employees and managers handle absence and an effective return to work.

Manual Handling

At Amey 25% of reported incidents and accidents and 23% of Lost Time Injuries are related to manual handling (lifting, lowering, pushing, pulling and carrying). This information is critical to our colleagues working in operational roles, however, important and useful for all of us to take note of.

Why do people not Stick to the Plan?
Take a few moments to think about why we sometimes sway away from the approved plan.

Sometimes what feels like being helpful or doing someone else a favour can unintentionally cause a risk to yourself or someone else. An example might be that you are not Kitted Out correctly to ‘lend a hand’ or have the correct training to stand-in for someone else. A few tips to keep in mind...

  • Be aware of complacency – routine tasks or repeated processes or activities can become very familiar
  • Keep your wits about you, maintain your quality standards and double check things
  • It’s ok to remind your workmates too, don’t hold back in pointing things out if you see something that’s not quite right. Remember: If in doubt, Shout Out!
