Make sure you Stay Alert

Stay Alert is the fourth principle of Zero Code and there are three main commitments

I will always make sure I am in the safest working position

It is your responsibility to work safely and ensure that you are not putting yourself at risk.

I will remain alert to what is happening around me and react accordingly to stay safe

Slips, trips and falls account for lost time, lower productivity and injuries. Many are avoidable just by staying alert at work and keeping your work environment safe.

I will ‘Shout Out!’ if anything is unacceptable, to keep myself and others around me safe

You should feel empowered to Shout Out! and speak up if something isn’t right, if conditions are unsafe or not acceptable. This helps prevent unnecessary accidents and keeps everyone safe.

Don't become complacent
Be aware of complacency – routine tasks or repeated processes or activities can become very familiar. Keep your wits about you, maintain your quality standards and double check things. It’s ok to remind your workmates too, don’t hold back in pointing things out if you see something that’s not quite right. Remember: If in doubt, Shout Out!

Please use the Stay Alert materials to help you understand what this means to you and your teams (see the downloads on the right hand side). Discuss these topics in teams to help improve health, safety and wellbeing and continually improve the way we work to keep ourselves safe every day.
